About Us
Tugalo Gas Company Inc. was founded in 1946 in Toccoa, GA, by Mr. Edward Gilmer, Sr. The company continues to be family owned and operated, and has grown to five offices in three states (NE Georgia, NW South Carolina, and SW North Carolina).
What does TUGALO mean?
We are often asked what the name “Tugalo” means, and if you are interested in some trivia, consider this: The word “TUGALO” is derived from the name of an early Cherokee settlement called DUGILUYI which means “fork of a stream”, “water rolling over rocks”, “dark water”, or “muddy water’, depending on your source. That old settlement is now at the bottom of Lake Hartwell. TUGALO is also the name of a rural community in northeast Stephens County, Georgia that was named after the Cherokee town. The naturalist William Bartram spelled the name “TUGILO” when he wrote about the area. The “TUGALO RIVER” runs near the City of Toccoa, GA, which is where our home office is located on Currahee Street. Those city and street names are also Cherokee words that mean “beautiful” (Toccoa), and “stands alone” (Currahee).
